Survey Instrument Technician 

Bartlett Engineering & Surveying is seeking a dependable and detail-oriented Land Surveying Instrument Technician to join our surveying team.
 
The Instrument Technician works as part of a field survey crew and is responsible for setting up, operating, and caring for the instruments and equipment used to collect accurate field data. This position works closely with a Crew Chief, surveyors, engineers, and other team members on a variety of projects throughout Eastern North Carolina.
 
Projects may include boundary surveys, topographic surveys, construction staking, residential developments, commercial sites, subdivisions, and municipal infrastructure.

Responsibilities:

• Set up and operate surveying instruments, including total stations, GPS equipment, data collectors, and levels.

• Assist the Crew Chief with field data collection for boundary, topographic, construction staking, and other surveying projects.

• Help ensure that survey measurements and field data are collected accurately and in accordance with project requirements.

• Calibrate and check survey instruments before and during fieldwork.

• Monitor equipment performance and promptly report malfunctions, damage, or accuracy concerns.

• Perform routine cleaning, care, maintenance, and basic troubleshooting of survey instruments and equipment.

• Assist with loading, transporting, setting up, and securing survey equipment at project sites.

• Properly record, organize, store, and transfer field survey data.

• Maintain accurate equipment, calibration, maintenance, and repair records.

• Help organize and track the inventory of survey instruments, tools, supplies, and safety equipment.

• Coordinate with other survey team members to ensure equipment is available and ready for scheduled projects.

• Follow company safety procedures and all project-specific safety requirements.

• Work near roadways, construction equipment, wooded areas, uneven terrain, and active construction sites.

• Communicate effectively with the Crew Chief and other team members regarding field conditions, equipment issues, and project needs.

• Perform other surveying and field-related duties as assigned.

 
Qualifications:
 
Required Qualifications

• High school diploma or equivalent

• Ability to follow technical instructions and safety procedures

• Dependable attendance and punctuality

 
Skills that Set You Apart:
 

• Strong attention to detail and commitment to accurate work

• Experience working on a land surveying or construction crew

• Experience with Trimble or similar surveying equipment

 
Work Environment & Schedule

• Work outdoors during hot, cold, rainy, humid, and occasionally snowy or freezing conditions.

• Walk and stand for extended periods.

• Travel over uneven, wooded, muddy, steep, or undeveloped terrain.

• Bend, kneel, stoop, climb, and perform repetitive physical activities.

• Carry and set up survey instruments, tripods, stakes, tools, and other field equipment.

• Work safely near roadways, construction vehicles, heavy equipment, and active construction operations.

• Work in environments where noise levels may occasionally be high.

• Travel by company vehicle to and from project sites.
