Celebrating Nine Years of Service and a Personal Milestone: A Journey with the North Carolina Surveyors Society

Writer: Bartlett Engineering & SurveyingBartlett Engineering & Surveying

For nearly a decade, Daniel Abrams, PLS has been a familiar and respected figure at the North Carolina Surveyors Society (NCSS) annual conference, where he has served as the Master of Ceremonies. His role has been vital in ensuring the smooth running of the event, but this year’s conference was extra special. For the first time, he attended not as an aspiring professional, but as a fully licensed surveyor.

The NCSS has long been a cornerstone for surveying professionals in the state, providing opportunities for networking, education, and advocacy. The society works to promote the surveying profession and its standards, offering resources to help members advance in their careers. One of its key activities is hosting an annual conference, which includes a variety of continuing education opportunities, such as Professional Development Hours (PDH) courses, as well as a chance for surveyors to catch up with colleagues from across the state.

As Master of Ceremonies, Daniel’s responsibilities extend far beyond just introducing speakers. He welcomes dignitaries from the North Carolina Board of Examiners for Engineers and Surveyors (NCBELS), the National Society of Professional Surveyors (NSPS), and local chapters, while also ensuring that the conference runs on time and with efficiency. He makes essential announcements throughout the event, alerts attendees to the start of PDH courses, and even gives away door prizes from the event’s vendors. When things get busy, Daniel is there to assist with the logistics, from helping to register attendees to scanning licenses for PDH courses.

Reflecting on his nine years with the NCSS, Daniel shared, “It has been a great privilege and honor to be a part of the society. I’m especially grateful to Sherri Barron, the NCSS Director, who has continuously invited me back for these duties and served as a resource in my journey to licensure.” He further noted that this year held a personal significance as it marked his first conference as a licensed surveyor. “I was able to obtain over half of the PDHs I need to maintain my licensure,” he said, “and I had the chance to reconnect with many friends I’ve made over the years.”

The NCSS conference also offers attendees the chance to engage with the wider surveying community. For Daniel, this event has been more than just a professional responsibility—it’s been a platform for personal growth and a network of support. “It’s been a wonderful experience to not only serve the society but to also see how far I’ve come in my career. I hope to continue serving the profession of surveying and the NCSS for many more years to come.”

This year’s conference was a reminder of the important role the NCSS plays in supporting surveying professionals and fostering connections. And for Daniel, it was a testament to his dedication and hard work, as well as the personal milestone of becoming a licensed surveyor.

As we look ahead, we are excited to see Daniel continue to make an impact, not only within our company but also within the surveying community. His journey serves as an inspiration for all of us, reminding us of the importance of dedication, service, and the drive to achieve one’s professional goals.
