David Via, PE visited the Wilson Academy of Applied Technology on Monday, February 17th for a Lunch & Learn with students interested in the field of engineering.

Students at the Wilson Academy of Applied Technology in Wilson, NC, are getting hands-on experience and skills that will help shape their futures. Through an innovative curriculum, they dive into fields like engineering, construction, and technology, gaining practical knowledge to prepare them for real-world careers. Recently, these students had the opportunity to participate in a special “Lunch and Learn” event that provided them with valuable insights into the world of civil engineering.

During the presentation, Via shared information about various aspects of civil engineering, giving students a deeper understanding of this dynamic field. They discussed different types of civil engineering, including structural, environmental, and transportation engineering, each playing a vital role in developing the infrastructure that supports daily life.

Via also outlined the services Bartlett Engineering & Surveying, PC offers, from land surveying to managing and designing civil engineering projects. The students learned how this work directly impacts everything from road construction to water treatment systems, emphasizing the importance of engineering in maintaining the safety and functionality of our communities.

One of the highlights of the session was a discussion of AutoCAD Civil3D, the powerful software that most engineers use to design projects to prepare plans. Students were shown how engineers utilize AutoCAD to create detailed drawings of structures, roadways, and utilities, and how these digital designs are essential in turning ideas into reality.

The session also touched on the path to becoming a licensed engineer. Students learned about the steps involved in earning a Professional Engineering (PE) license, including completing a degree from an accredited engineering program, gaining practical experience, and passing rigorous exams. The presentation stressed the significance of this license, as licensed engineers and surveyors are oversee projects and assure public safety.

The event concluded with a discussion on the critical role that licensed engineers play in safeguarding public well-being. From designing safe buildings and bridges to ensuring clean water and efficient transportation systems, the work of licensed engineers is essential in maintaining a secure and functional society.

The Lunch and Learn session at Wilson Academy provided students with invaluable knowledge about civil engineering and its importance in everyday life, inspiring many to consider pursuing a career in this rewarding field.
